Backyard Ponds and Safety Issues
If you are
considering adding a backyard pond you must
consider some important safety issues.
You have been
thinking that having a pond of your own in the
backyard would be a great thing. And you’re not
alone in this thinking. Recent trends in “must
haves” for a yard has skyrocketed the popularity
of personal ponds. With so many ponds appearing
on the scene, safety should be the main
consideration for anyone wanting a backyard
pond.
By following some basic rules of safety, you can
avoid a tragedy from permanently marring what
should otherwise be an enjoyable item to have on
your property.
Children should never be allowed near a pond (no
matter how shallow) without adult supervision.
Curious children can put themselves into
life-threatening positions without even
fully-realizing the dangers that even shallow
water can present to young children. There have
been documented accounts of children drowning in
as little as an inch of water and for that
reason an adult should accompany children
whenever they will be near the pond. It is also
important to place fencing or some other
restrictive material around your pond to prevent
neighborhood children from wandering into and
getting hurt in your backyard pond while you’re
away from home.
Care should also be taken to protect domestic
pets from your pond. This is especially true
with young puppies and kittens that could fall
into the pond and because of their young age: be
unable to climb back out of the pond, and drown.
And just as you want to ensure that neighborhood
children cannot access your pond while you’re
away, the same is true for the pets that
populate your neighborhood.
Children should be taught that the pond pump and
filter you’ve chosen for your pond isn’t a toy
and they should never mess with these things.
These pumps and filters should have safeguards
such as safety screens and/or emergency
shut-down functions should a piece of a child’s
clothing become entangled in either.
The electrical outlet used to supply power for
pond pumps and filters to operate should be
encased in a metal box to prevent children from
having easy access to the very dangerous
electric currents inside which could cause
serious shock or even death if accidentally
touched. Any electric cords used around your
pond or yard should be specifically manufactured
for outdoor use.
Backyard ponds can offer years of enjoyment for
you and your family by simply following these
basic rules of safety whenever you are around
your pond.
